Extending the olive branch to family

I'm a bit nomadic by nature. I've lived all over the country, visited hither and yon, and am itchin' to return to frequent overseas travel.

The downside of that is I've missed a lot of family gatherings, am closer to some of y'all than I am to some of my relatives, and have to forge serious quality time during my infrequent trips home.

As I've gotten older, I've found myself trying harder to work past some long-standing attitudes about certain relatives, just to interact with them. Sometimes, it's tricky because making that effort involves me confronting how I've been wrong about certain relatives and the reasons for their behavior. Other times, I'm working past just how they are. And, in other areas, I'm finding just how much I miss them, despite whatever issues we've had in the past.

Through it all, I love 'em. They're family. But, it's a trip, all the same.

To family.

i've extended everything from olive branches to vacation offers to cards and presents, and the only thing i get extended in return is a collective middle finger.

maybe it's good you stay away ... some relatives wont change and you have to keep your peace of mind.. if that means keeping your distance, then that's a great thing...

wait, they not able to do that to you, unless there's something you haven't told us yet.

I may have a slight logistic advantage here in that I've lived at a bit of a disadvantage. My nuclear family never was close to my extended family, so while I wish I'd gotten to know them better over the years, I've been spared much of their antics... and a certain liability to them with regard to my own antics.

It makes me feel bad, but some days I'm not sure whether I'd have it any other way.

Small update: Out of 4 efforts to reconnect, 2 have proven successful. The other 2, well... God bless 'em... I tried.
