Ever think of just giving up?

I've been writing my own shit for years now... I have always thought about putting a band together to get some live experience but nobody I know digs the kind of music I listen to so I feel like I'm better off as a solo act.

Sometimes I get very disillusioned with it all though. I don't see where my window on opportunity could appear as a solo artist... other than compiling a demo and sending it off to a label (most of which never get listened to anyway).

I pour all my spare time into my music but am having thoughts lately of just giving it all up. I don't even know if I could do that, as it's something I've been doing all my life.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

could you give up a cover of Pop Life (RUTJF style)
before you quit it... make a youtube or something simple....

i should be able to tell
you whether you need to donate
your equipment to a school
with kids that could do with
some musical toys....

Here's the thing MattyJam...

Once you've played with others and have that feeling that comes with it, giving-up is not an option. There's nothing like it in the world, even chemically. I don't care if it just you and one other person doing a punk rock version of Mary Had a Little Lamb, that's all it takes. So do yourself a favor and make a new friend who's a musician just to hqave that feeling once so you know what I'm talking about.

Then I have to ask you, do you quit everything that doesn't seem to work out after as much time as you put into this? If so, take up krochet or basket weaving or something you can master and it'll never change. This is art and it is what you make it.

Find the people who like what you do and if you can't then NEVER QUIT LOOKING and putting the vibe out there. Record music and use that to show people what you're talking about. They are out there so have a little stamina. Slow but sure should be your mantra when you're working on something, anything, that you you really want (also known as a goal).

Post your music here and let's hear why you're so down and maybe people can give you advice about where to find people who like your music or plays your type or whatever. Then again we may all say, "yeah, take up basket weaving"

Thankyou. That's great advice and I will take it.

I think it's natural to sometimes feel despondant at times, but we persevere ultimately because we love it.

Even at my lowest, I know deep down I couldn't give it up even if I wanted to. It's inside me and under my skin.

aaaaand then there's gigs like tonight were you got double booked, and the band you booked to back you are serious professionals and they aren't amused by the mess, and you suddenly remember that BEING in a band is not the same as BEING THE BAND.

And that part sucks.

So yeah. I think about just giving up all the time. Going back to just recording music at home. Playing for the massive fans is awesome. But all the work involved in GETTING to that point is a major pain in the butt, and at some point you wonder, seriously, what's the point.

I was just wondering....

are you good enough to go play is someone elses band.....
and are there music shops or music school round your way...
they'd be like the dating service for musicians...

maybe you could get more interested in other people
rather than yourself for a while....
